Calculator

Emergency fund calculator

Multiplies the essential monthly bills you enter by a number of months, and shows a starter amount separately. The two numbers are not the same goal.

Housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance, and minimum debt payments you would still owe.

Starter, separate from the month target

$1,000.00

3 months of the essentials you entered

$5,400.00

How this is calculated

Full target = essential monthly costs × months, both rounded to whole cents before multiplying. The starter amount is not subtracted and not added. Three and six months are common teaching ranges, not a legal standard. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says the amount depends on your own expenses.

A $1,000 starter is a popular milestone from debt-payoff curricula such as Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps. It is included as an editable default, not as official guidance. The calculator does not decide which bills are essential — you do, by what you type.
